MONKEY BITES WOMAN IN CALIFORNIA

9/9/2012

A Javan Macaque in Paso Robles California bit and severely injured a woman.   According to the Chicago Tribune, the monkey was subsisting on Frost Flakes cereal and juice.  Apparently, a monkey has a "dog-like bite" and bit the victim several times on her arms and fingers.

As a victim of an animal bite, that woman, if she was bitten in IL, would be able to seek damages from the owner of the pet.  Chicago, in particular, has a dog-bite statute that provides remedies for pets, especially those from certain breeds or those that have a prior history of violent behavior.
Generally, dog bite victims can pursue compensatory damages for their medical bills and their pain and suffering.  Depending on the circumstances of the bite, victims may pursue punitive and other exemplary damages as well.

The dog bite statute is not limited to dogs.  It includes any animal kept as a pet, including, as the article above describes, monkeys, cats, reptiles, insects, and even birds.

Victims should contact an attorney as soon as possible.  Owners that fail to comply with the law or take reasonable measures to prevent harm are liable for the damages that flow from their negligence.  No victim should have to bear the costs of their medical treatments or allow dangerous animals to continue to harm others. Nair Law can help victims recover damages quickly, allowing victims to move on with their lives.
